Oh man, I remember beta testing Horizons.

The bug where anyone could wear any armor type was hilarious. My monk was invincible in plate armor :p I have so many good memories from from 1997 to 2001 from MMOGs when it was still all new and awe inspiring for me. Maybe it's time to resub for a month of EQ and wander around aimlessly revisiting the now vacant spots I used to hang out in.

It's called -- blogging!!! heh :) Seriously, though, we have been given Cataclysm's broad details and even a fly-through of the revamped areas. Blizzard is slyly using Cataclysm as an excuse to revisit and revamp areas that now look quite dated compared to newer ones, without being particularly constrained by the way it originally was.

EQ2 takes place in a destroyed and revamped Norrath, the setting of EQ. If they had instead reshaped the original world into the new world, including new engine, graphics, etc, instead of breaking off and making a new sequel, how would that have changed how we view EQ today?

? Cataclysm hasn't been released yet - how can you do a what if with something that is itself a what if?

"What would the world be like if EQ had presciently followed WoW’s lead and completely rewrote their existing world, Cataclysm-esque?"

I have thought about that myself, I think it could have been something great had they done so. I really liked EQ2 but it just didn't have the same feel of the original.

Some of those game you mentioned were really cool, Horizons in particular. I always thought that one was a neat game, just came at a bad time IMO.

New to MMOs at the time, I bought AC1, Horizons and EQ at the same time. hehe. I tried all three and liked AC1 best. I graduated to AC2 but was really just hanging on for Middle Earth Online which never released under that banner. It shuffled hands years later to Turbine and become LOTRO. By then I was soul deep in WOW, had tried EQ2 and wasn't overly excited about LOTRO since I was carrying bitter feelings about the AC2 shutdown. Oh MMO memories...

Excellent followup. Nice to know at least one of these made it past the wishful thinking stage.
